Can Cui is a Presidential Assistant Professor of Environmental Science at Singapore Management University’s (SMU) College of Integrative Studies (CIS) and a Researcher at the Singapore Green Finance Centre. Before joining SMU, she was a postdoctoral researcher at ETH Zurich. Her research examines how economies can support a resilient and sustainable transition toward a net-zero system, with a focus on the roles of different actors in this transition. She studies material and energy flows associated with the low-carbon transition, including critical minerals and renewable energy technologies, and the implications of related dependencies for developing and emerging economies. At CIS, she teaches undergraduate courses on energy and sustainability and mentors students on climate and energy issues. Her research on emerging emitters and clean energy supply chains has been published in journals including Nature Communications and National Science Review.
