Dr Colin Tan is both a qualified doctor as well as a qualified lawyer. After stints in medical practice and legal practice, he served as a District Judge, initially in the Subordinate Courts and later in the Family Justice Courts, for over 13 years where he presided over divorce, division of matrimonial assets, maintenance, family violence, mental capacity and probate cases. During his time in the judiciary, he held various concurrent appointments, including Judge-Advisor for Information Technology and Senior Director of the Singapore Judicial College. He has taught family law at the National University of Singapore and also for the Bar Course, and, in the area of research, his PhD focused on division of matrimonial assets and this remains one of his main research interests in addition to other areas in the field of family law. He currently teaches Evidence Law and Family Law.
