Fumiya Uchikoshi is Presidential Assistant Professor of Sociology at Singapore Management University. His research lies at the intersection of social stratification, social demography, and family sociology, with a particular focus on demographic change and meritocracy in Japan and East Asia. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods, his work examines how educational systems, family formation, and institutional change shape life-course outcomes and social inequality.
His research has been published in leading journals including Demography and Population and Development Review, and has received recognition from American Sociological Association, International Sociological Association, and Population Association of Japan. Prior to joining SMU, he was an Academy Scholar at the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies. While at Harvard, he was also affiliated with Weatherhead Research Cluster on Comparative Inequality and Inclusion. He earned his PhD in Sociology from Princeton University and continues to contribute to the fields of sociology and demography through research, teaching, and international collaborations.
