Prior to joining SMU, Professor Lim Soo Ping served over 37 years in the Singapore Public Service.  

A Colombo Plan scholar, he joined the then Public Works Department in 1975. In 1988, he was admitted into the Government Administrative Service to carry out policy work in government. In that capacity, Prof Lim has worked as Deputy Secretary in five ministries, namely, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of National Development, the then Ministry of Community Development, the Prime Minister’s Office (Public Service Division) and the then Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts.

Prof Lim was also, at various times, Secretary to the Public Service Commission, the Legal Service Commission, a Presidential Commission of Inquiry and the Presidential Council on the Maintenance of Religious Harmony. He has also served on the boards of a few statutory boards and government-owned companies, e.g. Woodbridge Hospital/Institute of Mental Health, Nanyang Polytechnic, Tan Tock Seng Hospital and The Esplanade. 

In February 2007, the President of Singapore appointed him Auditor-General of Singapore. During his 6-year term as Singapore’s third Auditor-General, he set up the AGO Academy to enhance the training of public sector auditors.  

Throughout his previous career, Prof Lim has been giving talks on subjects relating to good corporate governance, policy development, leadership and communication. He continues to do so today especially at the Civil Service College.    Currently, Prof Lim gives occasional talks on leadership and on ethics to public sector (e.g. State Courts, MSF, Accountant-General’s Office and the Institute of Internal Auditors).
