PANG Yang Hoong
Professor of Accounting
Prof Pang Yang Hoong was a member of the planning team at SMU and served as Dean, School of Accountancy from 1 September 2000. She was also appointed Vice Provost (Undergraduate) on 1 June 2004 and held both appointments concurrently till June 2015. From July 2015 to June 2017 she was the Vice Provost (Undergraduate Matters and Student Development). Subsequently, Prof Pang served as Senior Advisor to the SMU President until 2021, where she assisted with special projects reporting directly to the SMU President.
Upon graduation from the then University of Singapore in 1976 with a Bachelor of Accountancy (Hons), she joined the international audit firm of Peat Marwick, Mitchell & Co, where she worked for three years as an audit senior. Having obtained her qualification as a CPA, she became a member of the faculty of the School of Accountancy, University of Singapore in 1979. She obtained her Master of Economics, majoring in Accounting and Finance, at Monash University in Clayton, Australia in 1982. She completed her PhD in Accounting at Queen’s University, Canada in 1991. Prior to joining SMU, she was the Director of the PhD Programme, founding editor of the Accounting & Business Review, and the Head of the Division of Auditing & Taxation at the School of Accountancy & Business, Nanyang Technological University.
Prof Pang has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in financial accounting, corporate reporting and disclosure, and accounting theory. Her research interests are in issues relating to corporate disclosures, accounting and the law, and corporate governance.
Prof Pang is a Board Member of Singapore Accountancy Commission (SAC) and Chair of SAC Learning and Assessment Committee – Professional Programme, since April 2017.
She was a Council Member of Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA) and sat on their Integrated Reporting Steering Committee and Board of Education and Examiners till 2016.
In December 2008, Prof Pang was appointed to the Committee to Develop the Accountancy Sector (CDAS) by the Minister of Finance. CDAS aims to position Singapore as the leading international centre in Asia for accountancy services and professionals. She was also appointed a member of the Pro-Tem Singapore Accountancy Council (PSAC), QP Development Panel, in 2011. She was a member of the Singapore QP Advisory Council till 2017.
From April 2009 to March 2016, she was appointed to the Singapore Polytechnic (SP) Board of Governors by the Ministry of Education. She was also appointed Chair of their Investment Committee and Member of their Administration & Development Committee in April 2012.
Prof Pang has also served as Board Member of the Accounting & Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA) from April 2007 to March 2012 and is a member of the Disciplinary Committee of the Casino Regulatory Authority since May 2014.
