Sustainable Living

Tianyao Qu is Assistant Professor of Sociology at Singapore Management University. Her research examines how social relationships shape health, well-being, and social inequality across the life course. Her work focuses on social networks, the sociology of health and illness, aging, gender, and economic sociology, with particular interest in understanding how social connections influence cognitive and mental health.
Sascha Riaz is Presidential Assistant Professor of Political Science at Singapore Management University. His research focuses on political behavior, with particular interests in immigration, xenophobia, political violence, and causal inference.
Fumiya Uchikoshi is Presidential Assistant Professor of Sociology at Singapore Management University. His research lies at the intersection of social stratification, social demography, and family sociology, with a particular focus on demographic change and meritocracy in Japan and East Asia.
Shalom Chalson is Assistant Professor of Philosophy (Education) at Singapore Management University. Her research interests lie in moral, social, and political philosophy, with a particular focus on the ethics of discrimination. In her doctoral work, she develops an account of wrongful discrimination focused on the evidential relevance of a deciding agent’s considerations. The upshot is an account that is both neutral between competing moral theories and capable of identifying wrongful inequalities across a broad range of contexts.

Alberto Costa is an Associate Professor of Urban Informatics (Research) at Singapore Management University (SMU). His research focuses on the development of optimization methods for resilient infrastructure, energy systems, and decision-making under uncertainty. He combines mathematical programming, black-box optimization, robust optimization, and AI-driven decision support to address real-world challenges in complex systems.

Dr Sarah Shi Hui Wong is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Singapore Management University. Bridging cognitive and educational psychology, she investigates counterintuitive strategies that improve higher order learning. She pioneered deliberate erring, where people intentionally commit and correct errors in low-stakes contexts for better learning, and studies learning by teaching, another counterintuitive way to harness learning benefits via the act of teaching.

Christianna Parr is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at SMU. She completed her PhD in Political Science at the University of Washington, where she was the Duck Family Graduate Fellow at the Center for Environmental Politics and affiliated with the Center for Statistics and the Social Sciences. Prior to joining SMU, she taught comparative politics, world politics and political methodology at the University of Washington, where she received the departmental teaching award.
